History of "Cam" Can

Cameron J. ("Cam") Williams was born on May 22, 2012, as a healthy 9 lb. 2 oz. baby boy. No symptoms of SMA were detected until he was almost 3 months old. Never will we forget those days in the hospital, feeling so confused and angry—yet strengthened by the social workers and case managers who made the long road a bit easier.

Because of our unexpected trauma, our mission is to bring awareness about SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) and other debilitating childhood diseases that affect every member of the household. We also want to equip the families of existing and recently diagnosed children with information about medical equipment, basic necessities, and compassionate support.

Another goal is to teach methods for maintaining a child’s health, host a variety of activities and fundraising events, to lovingly embrace the families of those who have been recently diagnosed, and to introduce them to a caring, compassionate community.

"Riding for Cameron & SMA Awareness - 150 Mile Bike Ride" provided finances for our family to attend the Annual 2013 SMA Conference in Anaheim, CA, on June 13th - 16th. This conference and workshops will teach us how to maintain good health for Cameron and to learn about specialized equipment that will make life easier for our entire family.

A large portion of our support system, such as relatives, church family, co-workers, and friends, may not be available to others. So our desire is that families battling any debilitating condition will know that in every aspect of their trauma, someone will always be there to lend a helping hand. As long as we continue to trust in God and His specific plan for our lives, we believe our project will be a success.
