Who International Community Builders Serves

As the team began to collaborate, they chose to focus specifically on the latest census data, revealing a significant increase in children being raised by extended family members—primarily grandparents.

The U.S. Census Bureau statistics indicate that 4.9 million children (7% under age 18) live in grandparent households, with 1.4 million children (almost one child in 20) living in an absentee parent household with a grandparent (www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/population/cb09-75.html).

This increase is likely based upon our current economic challenges, including the housing and foreclosure crisis, loss of jobs, and general economic woes. Clearly, grandparents are increasingly providing the stability and security of home for their families.

For these grandparents, raising a second family wasn't part of their life plan. However, unexpected events and fractures in spousal relationships often summon loving grandparents to re-assume parental duties. Many relative caregivers are also facing financial, health, housing, education and work challenges that have spoiled their retirement plans. These startling statistics magnify the need for more available resources and support systems for "grandfamilies".

An additional 1.9 million children are living in households headed by other relatives, suggesting that when necessary, aunts, uncles, cousins and even siblings have also assumed guardian roles to America’s children.

Another glaring issue, highlighted by the U .S. Census Bureau, is the approximate 13.6 million single parents in the U.S. responsible for raising 21.2 million children. Single father homes, the fastest growing type of family structure, have escalated 60% in the last decade. (www.usalegalcare.com).

Clearly, someone must offer support to these struggling, desperate guardians. So, International Community Builders has adopted a program that will:

  • empower grandparents raising grandchildren
  • empower single parent families
  • train families to become debt-free
  • empower families affected by SMA and other childhood diseases

Step-by-step, ICB will introduce these households to a variety of valuable services that will benefit both parents and children, such as:

  1. family workshops, online activities, and stimulating events.
  2. mentoring, tutoring, before and after-school programs, sports, and community gardening.
  3. training skills for employment and promotion.
  4. budgeting and money management workshops.
  5. an online library incentive program to encourage Internet users of all ages to experience the joy of learning, personal development and productive living.

And at the very heart of the ICB mission is a passion to connect with and provide a global model for other nonprofit organizations to replicate—around the world!
